I’ve played follow the leader

It’s rained on my parade

I’ve taken chances and paid my dues

Yea, I get it ‘cause I’ve been there too

I’ve been walkin’ uphill both ways

But I’ve been movin’ forward slowly

For every two steps forward I take one step back

But, oh, I get it, and I’m tryna stay on track

‘Cause we only get one chance if we wanna do it all

But there’s a hundred thousand rules that we have to follow

And I can’t promise that I’ll listen to the world outside

But I’ll try…. to life my best life

I’ve been the odd one out

Though I’ve tried so hard to fit in

But sometimes wishes go unanswered

And that happens for a reason

‘Cause we only get one chance if we wanna do it all

But there’s a hundred thousand rules that we have to follow

And I can’t promise that I’ll listen to the world outside

But I’ll try…. to life my best life

Yea, we only get one chance if we wanna do it all

Like take a different path than what the whole world is on

So I can’t promise that I’ll listen to the world outside

But I’ll try…. to life my best life

For 12 and a half years, I lived in North Carolina. I had friends and family there, and I grew accustomed to a lot of the culture. I got used to using "yes ma'am and no sir", owning only 1 or 2 necessary hoodies (which, apparently are not the same thing as sweatshirts), and talking to absolutely everyone just because it was normal to have a conversation with strangers about how their cousin's mother's brother's daughter won a talent show. However, when I moved to this small town, I realized that things are a bit different than they were back in NC. For starters, I know a grand total of about 4 or 5 people that actually like and listen to country music!

I wouldn't go around saying that my personality is completely defined by music, but I'd say that it definitely plays a major role in my life. Between musicals and performing live on stage to working quietly at home with country music playing in the background, I would say that I have a very strong connection to music in general. I mean, you could pretty much ask anyone that's ever been within a 5-foot radius of me what kind of music I like and I'm positive that about 90% of people will be able to say (for the record, I love country music and 50s and 60s rock). Anyways, I find it easier to talk about something that almost everyone everywhere will know something about, even if it isn't something I agree with. I truly believe that listening to and playing music are a part of me, even if I express that a little bit too often. Through music, I have found my identity.

My parents always tell me that I look like I belong on stage. They always say I look comfortable and confident when I step into my persona of "Sofia Nunzia". In a way, it almost feels as if I'm playing a role in a musical, taking on the charisma and personality of this second side of me. I've never much had an issue with being on stage, it's one of my happy places. I love the feeling of getting to own the room and feel all the lights shining on my face. I love being able to appreciate my finished work, and I especially adore watching other musicians fall in love with music when they are in the spotlight. Music is a world in which people are connected, and the best part is that there's something for everyone. I think I've always known that I want to pursue music in the future, but working hard now is a really fun and relieving way to spend my time. Through music, I was able to boost my confidence.

This piece represents me because I have been singing and writing songs my whole life, it's a huge part of who I am today. This also represents who CA is as a community because by using other peoples' words in this song, I feel as though it brought us together. As my peers listen to the song, I want them to think about their feelings towards the aspects of their own lives I was trying to portray in a way that would make them relatable.
